]]> At the center of Lake Rotorua lies Mokoia Island, the setting of a cherished Māori love legend. A young woman, the daughter of a powerful chief on the eastern shore, fell in love with a man who lived on the island. Their love was forbidden by her father, who sought to keep them apart.
Each day, the young man would sit by the lake, playing his flute, his music carrying across the water as a call of longing. One night, moved by the melody, the young woman swam across the lake to reach him. Their reunion marked the triumph of love over distance and opposition.
This painting reimagines that timeless story — a tribute to devotion, courage, and the enduring power of love
